Eliezer ben Hurcanus

Eliezer ben Hyrcanus Gen. the Great, in the Mishnah simply called Rabbi Eliezer (more than 320 times ), was a Jewish scholar. He was a pupil of Johanan ben Zakkai and was among the Tannaim of the second generation ( 90-130 AD)

Although he was placed due to opposition to the majority in spell, but was nevertheless a leading figure and hero of legends.

He preserved traditions from before the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD ( Mischnatraktat Para). In Aboth II, 11 he is characterized as calcified cistern that loses not a drop ( = nothing from what they have learned and heard forgets ). And goes on to say about him ( II, 12): If all the sages of Israel on a scale would be, and Eliezer, the son of Hyrcanus, on the other, this would outweigh them all ( even " overweight " is, however, Eleazar, the son of Arach, have been said to have outweighed alone in a pan all the wise men of Israel plus Rabbi Eliezer in the other pan; Eleazar ben Arach about this, one of the five most distinguished pupil of Johanan ben Zakkai, but no other historical evidence remained).

Often (especially because of its rejection of innovations within the Halakhah ) Rabbi Eliezer was located in dispute with Yehoshua ben Hananiah and Akiba (ben Joseph) ( of his own pupils was ). Despite his conservatism, he went sober Ishmael in his interpretative practice much too far, so that Ishmael cried to him: See, you say to Scripture: Be quiet until I interpret you! ( Sifra, Tazria Negaim 13.2, W. 68b).

Eliezer taught in Lydda and led the Pharisaic tradition in Yavneh on. However, an assignment to Bet Hillel ( School of Hillel ) or Bet Shammai ( School of Shammai ) is not possible.

The often found in the secondary literature adopting its inclination to Christianity is no evidence in the sources.
