Elijah Brigham

Elijah Brigham (* July 7, 1751 in Northborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts, † February 22, 1816 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1811 and 1816 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Elijah Brigham attended until 1778 Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire). After studying law, he decided not to work as a lawyer. Instead, he was active in Westborough commercially. At the same time he embarked on a political career. From 1791 to 1793 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts; 1796-1810 he was several times a member of the State Senate. From 1795 to 1811 he served as an appellate judge. In the years 1799, 1800 and 1806, he held the post of State Councilor in Massachusetts.

In the congressional elections of 1810, Brigham was elected the tenth electoral district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Joseph Allen on March 4, 1811. After two re- elections he could remain until his death in Congress. Since 1815, he represented there as a successor of Abijah Bigelow the eleventh district of his state. In his time as a congressman of the British -American War fell from 1812. Elijah Brigham died on 22 February 1816 in the German capital Washington and was buried at the local cemetery Congress.
