Elijah H. Mills

Elijah Hunt Mills ( born December 1, 1776 in Chesterfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, † May 5, 1829 in Northampton, Massachusetts ) was an American politician ( Federalist Party), who represented the state of Massachusetts in both chambers of Congress.

Elijah Mills received his education from private tutors. He attended the Williams College and received his degree there in 1797. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and opened a law office in Northampton. Later he became district attorney in Hampshire County and managed from 1823 own Law School in Northampton.

Mills ' political career began in the House of Representatives of Massachusetts, where he served from 1811 to 1814. Then he was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States and represented the interests of the Federalists there on 4 March 1815 to the March 3, 1819 In the episode he initially returned to Parliament of his native State, and served there in 1820 as a speaker.; In the same year he was elected to succeed the retiring U.S. Senator Prentiss Mellen. After a re-election he remained until March 3, 1827 in Washington; another candidacy was unsuccessful in 1826. Then Mills withdrew due to health problems from public life.

Elijah Mills was the great-grandfather of Henry Cabot Lodge, who was also 1937-1953 for Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate, and John Davis Lodge, the Governor of Connecticut from 1951 to 1955. The eminent mathematician and philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce was Mills ' grandchildren.
