Eliot Hodgkin

Curwen Eliot Hodgkin ( born June 19, 1905 in Purley Lodge, Pangbourne, near Reading; † 31 May 1987) was an English painter. Although he began painting with oil paint, he used for most of his works tempera paints, especially for his still lifes.

Home life

Hodgkin was the only son of his parents, Charles Ernest Hodgkin and Alice Jane Brooke. The Hodgkin's family were a Quaker family and related to Roger Fry. Eliot, cousin of the abstract painter Howard Hodgkin, attended from 1919 to 1923 the Harrow School. His artistic life began in London at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in Francis Ernest Jackson.
