In order to promote the night train connections between Spain and its northern neighboring countries and to better market, the French and the Spanish state railway a joint company decided to start this project in 2001. Elipsos based in Madrid became operational on 1 April 2001. Because of that law - the European long-distance rail traffic was not yet liberalized - marketed and oversaw Elipsos but only the international night train services. The trains operate itself officially continue the RENFE ( on Spanish territory ) and SNCF ( French territory ), and - as in December 2012 even destinations in Italy and in Switzerland were offered - Trenitalia and SBB.

  • Francisco de Goya (Madrid Chamartin Paris Austerlitz )
  • Joan Miró ( Barcelona França - Paris Austerlitz )

Until December 8, 2012, these compounds have been marketed:

  • Pau Casals ( Barcelona França - Zurich Main Station was set on December 9, 2012)
  • Salvador Dalí ( Barcelona França - Milano Centrale; adjusted from 7 December 2012)

All compounds were operated with Talgo Series VI, which have a Umspureinrichtung to switch between Iberian gauge (1668 mm) and European standard gauge ( 1435 mm).

In 2009, 330,000 passengers transported Elipsos.
