The Elisabeth- Anna- Palais is a secular building in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony

Building

The building was built of red brick, wears many ornaments and baroque features. At the southeast corner (now at the entrance left) stands a conspicuous tower aloft, which concludes with an onion-shaped dome. On the east, the castle facing side there was a large Zusatzbau, who acted as kitchen wing.

History

The Elisabeth- Anna- Palais was built by order of the last Grand Duke of Oldenburg Friedrich August according to the plans of the upper head of planning Louis Freese. Usually, the ducal family resided in the Oldenburg castle. Friedrich August (which was not until 1900 reigning Grand Duke was ), but left in the castle garden (now in the line between the castle and Augusteum ) build a new home. The construction period lasted from 1894 to 1896. During this time died his wife Elisabeth Anna of Prussia ( 1857-1895 ), the daughter of Frederick Charles Nicholas of Prussia ( 1828-1885 ). In her honor, the palace received its present name. On October 24, 1896 Friedrich August moved with his second wife, Elisabeth Mathilde Alexandrine of Mecklenburg -Schwerin ( 1869-1955 ), the daughter of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II ( 1823-1883 ) and his family in the new residence.

After the Grand Duke had been forced on 8 November 1918 by scattered revolutionaries to hoist on the castle as on the Elisabeth- Anna- Palais, the red flag, he resigned three days later on the throne and retired to Rastede to his castle back.

After his resignation, the Palace was used in another form. The early 1960s had the kitchen wing of the new road " Castle Wall" soft and was demolished. Since the palace was now directly on the newly built road, it got to this page also has its own entrance. Today, the Social Court Oldenburg is located in the building.
