Elisabeth Cruciger

Elisabeth Cruciger (or Kreuziger, Creutziger etc. ) (* 1500 in Meseritz in Pomerania; † May 2, 1535 in Wittenberg) was a personal friend of Martin Luther and was the first poet of sacred music in the Reformation environment.

Life

She was born as Elisabeth von Meseritz in a Pomeranian noble family and have brought a child into Prämonstratenserinnenkloster Marie Busch to Treptow an der Rega. By Johannes Bugenhagen she met the reformatory ideas, converted to the Lutheran faith, left the monastery in 1522 and went to Wittenberg, where she lived in the household of Bugenhagen and 1524 the students and staff of Martin Luther, the theologian Caspar Cruciger married and with him a daughter and a son, Caspar Cruciger the Younger had. The daughter Elizabeth married - as the widow of the Rector cone - in Eisleben, Martin Luther's son Hans Luther.

Elisabeth Cruciger is considered the first poet hymns of the Protestant Church.
