Elisabeth of Brandenburg, Duchess of Pomerania

Elisabeth von Brandenburg (* 1425, † after 13 January 1465), was a princess of Brandenburg and by marriage Duchess of Pomerania.

Life

Elizabeth was a daughter of Margrave John of Brandenburg (1406-1464), called the alchemist from his marriage to Barbara (1405-1465), daughter of Duke Rudolf III. of Saxe- Wittenberg. Elizabeth's father gave up the rights to his birthright, and the succession in Brandenburg and received the Franconian possessions of the Hohenzollerns. Her sisters were the Danish Queen Dorothea and the Marchioness Barbara of Mantua.

They married on August 27, 1440 Duke Joachim I of Pomerania -Stettin ( 1427-1451 ). The marriage sealed a comparison of Brandenburg Pomerania. Joachim died after eleven years of marriage under legacy of a son of the plague in Szczecin.

On March 5, 1454 she married her second husband Duke of Pomerania Rügen Wartislaw X. ( 1435-1478 ). After the death of her son his first marriage broke a dispute over the inheritance of the house Szczecin. In 1464, all three sons of Elizabeth had died, just as her father. Her second marriage was unhappy in the highest degree, her husband had " [ ... ] they intended to murder and to bring to life and limb that it was un-Christian and pitiful also recovered their interest and pensions. "

Elisabeth ran away from her husband in the Mark Brandenburg and renounced in favor of her uncle, the Elector Frederick of Brandenburg on Ückermünde which their Joachim had promised as dowry, as well as on her jointure Barth, which she had been promised in marriage to Wartislaw. Her uncle prescribed her because of her " great distress and poverty " instead of their paternal inheritance Arnswalde along with dishes and gradients Lippehne and Berlinchen.

Frederick took the fate of his niece on the occasion negotiations with Wartislaw to Stettin to terminate and to present his claim to stricter law. Wartislaw took his duchy finally in 1466 after mediation of the Duke Henry of Mecklenburg fief by Elector Frederick II

From her first marriage to Joachim Elizabeth had a son:
