Elisabeth of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Duchess of Guelders

Elisabeth of Brunswick- Lüneburg ( born September 11, 1494 in Celle, † April 2, 1572 in Geldern ) was a princess of Brunswick- Lüneburg and by marriage Duchess of funds.

Life

Elizabeth was a daughter of Duke Henry I of Brunswick- Lüneburg (1468-1532) from his marriage to Margaret (1469-1528), daughter of the Elector Ernst of Saxony.

She married on 7 December 1518 Celle Charles of Egmond, Duke of Gelre ( 1467-1538 ). In the marriage contract, Karl had kept open the succession of Geldern in Lorraine. and his wife a lifetime annual pension of 4,000 florins and office and city funds promised as dowry. The marriage remained childless, and after ten years of marriage to Emperor Charles V. likened October 3, 1528 in Gorinchem with Charles of Egmond, in which Karl funds and Zutphen in the event of his death ceded to the Emperor.

Elizabeth survived her husband by many years. She retired to her jointure, and lived at the castle funds. As a zealous Catholic, she gave the local parish church and the church in Kerken with generous cash and in-kind gifts. The attempt by the introduction of the Reformation in her jointure in 1566, suppressed by Elisabeth. The Duchess died in funds and was buried under the high altar of the local parish church. A planned during her lifetime tomb was not carried out.
