Elisha Dyer

Elisha Dyer ( born July 20, 1811 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † May 17, 1890 ) was an American politician and 1857-1859 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and political rise

Elisha Dyer attended after elementary school at Brown University. After that he took part in his father, who ran a cotton mill, among other companies. At the age of 20 he became a partner in this company. Since 1840 he was also politically active. In that year he became head of the militia ( Adjutant General ) his state. This office he held for five years. He was also involved in the suppression of the uprising initiated by Thomas Dorr, who had triggered a serious crisis in Rhode Iceland 1842-1843. He was also over ten years member of the school board of Rhode Iceland.

Governor of Rhode Iceland and other life

Elisha Dyer was a member of the Republican Party as their candidate, he was elected in 1857 as governor of his state. After a re-election in 1858 he was able to hold that office between May 26, 1857 May 31, 1859. This period was overshadowed by the discussions leading to the Civil War. During the war he was a captain of an infantry unit from Rhode Iceland. With this unit, he was sent in May 1862 Washington to help defend the city against a possible attack by the Confederate Army under General Stonewall Jackson.

After the war he became president of the Exchange Bank, second vice president of the Art Association of Rhode Iceland (Rhode Iceland Art Association ) and representative of his state for the planned 1871 World's Fair in London. Dyer was also a member of the historical and Agricultural Society of Rhode Iceland. He died in May 1890., With his wife Anna Jones Hoppin he had seven children, including the son of Elisha, who is also governor of Rhode Iceland should be 1897-1900.
