Elisha Hunt Allen

Elisha Hunt Allen ( born January 28, 1804 in New Salem, Franklin County, Massachusetts, † January 1, 1883 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1841 and 1843 he represented the state of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Elisha Allen was the son of Samuel Clesson Allen (1772-1842), who was sitting 1817-1829 for Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives. The younger Allen attended the New Salem Academy and then to 1823 the Williams College in Williamstown. After a subsequent study of law and its made ​​in 1825 admitted to the bar, he began practicing in his new profession in Brattleboro (Vermont ). Later he transferred his residence and his law firm to Bangor in Maine.

Allen joined the Whig party to. Between 1835 and 1840 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Maine. In 1838, he served as its president. In 1840 he was selected in the eighth electoral district of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Thomas Davee of the Democratic Party on March 4, 1841. Already at the next election the eighth district of Maine was abolished. Allen tried unsuccessfully to be elected to Congress again in another district.

In 1846, Allen was re-elected to the House of Representatives from Maine. In 1847 he moved to Boston, where he worked as a lawyer again. In his new home Allen remained politically active. In 1849 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. In 1850 he became an American consul in the former Kingdom of Hawaii. There, he established close contacts with the local government. Finally, he was first in place of Gerrit P. Judd of Finance and later also appointed to the Supreme Judge of the Hawaiian Islands. His last office was that of the Hawaiian ambassador in Washington. In this capacity he attended on January 1, 1883 New Year reception by President Chester A. Arthur. During this event, he died very suddenly. Elisha Allen was married twice and had six children.
