Elizabeth City is a place in the Pasquotank and Camden counties in the state of North Carolina in the United States of America, and is also the administrative seat of Pasquotank County. The city is part of the Inner Banks region in the coastal plain of the state. The place was originally founded in 1793 as Redding, but later renamed Elizabeth City. It is unknown whether the name refers to Elizabeth I of England or the wife of the town's founder, Elizabeth " Betsy " Tooley.

One of the great Coast Guard Air Station located on the southern city limits of Elizabeth City, since these are the United States Department of Homeland Security assumes is the basis of one of the largest employers and an important economic factor in addition to tourism.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,188 people in 6,577 households and 4,189 families. The population density is 742.3 inhabitants per km ². Ethnically, the population itself is composed of 40.24 % White, 56.60 % African American, 0.27 % Native American, 0.79 % Asian, 0.62 % from other races residents, 1.46 % comes from two or more races. 1.5 % of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,577 households out of which 32.3 % have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7 % were married couples living together, 23.1 % had a female householder with no husband, and 36.6 % were non-families. 31.7 % of all households are made up and in 14.5 % have someone living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.01.

25.7 % of the population were under 18 years old. 15.1 % from 18 to 24 years, 25.4% between 25 and 44 years 18.1% between 45 and 64, and 15.7 % were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 24,193, and the median income for a family was $ 28,037. Males had a median income of $ 27,434 versus $ 20,836 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,333. 25.1 % of the population and 27.2% of families are below the poverty line. 37.5 % of them are children and adolescents under age 18 and 23.7% are 65 years or older.

Geography

Elizabeth City is located on the banks of the Pasquotank River, which empties into the Albemarle Sound, and forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city covers an area 24.8 km ².
