Elizabeth Manley

Elizabeth Ann Manley, CM ( born August 7, 1965 in Belleville, Ontario ) is a former Canadian figure skater who started in a single run.

Elizabeth Manley began as a small child with figure skating. She has three older brothers. With her ​​brother Greg, she tried some time in ice dancing. She is the cousin of former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister from 2002, John Manley. Because of the military occupation of the father, Bernard Joseph Manley, the family had to move often. When Manley was nine years old, the family moved to Ottawa. There, her parents were divorced and Manley stayed with her ​​mother Joan, who promoted the figure skating career of her daughter.

In 1982, she finished 13th in her first World Cup. Otherwise, however, this year was very successful and therefore drew Manley to Lake Placid, New York to train there intense. There she felt but not well and suffering from homesickness, and they also increased in importance. At the Canadian Championships in 1983 Manley won a medal and then took a break from the sport. The trainer pair Sonya and Peter Dunfield she took but then back onto the ice. In 1984, Manley then for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games in part. At the World Championships in the years 1984 to 1987 she always placed itself in the top ten, but failed to win a medal. 1987 this was particularly bitter, as they fell back due to a bad freestyle to fourth place after they had fought after the duty and the short program for the title. In the years 1985, 1987 and 1988, Manley was Canadian champion. At the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary in 1988 Manley won the silver medal as a complete surprise. The experts had only to a duel between Katarina Witt and Debi Thomas, who set " Battle of the Carmens ", as both were running in the free skate to Bizet's Carmen. Manley but won the freestyle in an impressive manner and only stayed extremely close behind Katarina Witt in the final standings. In the subsequent World Championships in Budapest, she repeated this result and thus won their only World Championship medal.

1988 ended Elizabeth Manley her amateur career and moved on to the pros. She has appeared in some ice revues. Today she works as a figure skating coach and occasionally as Sportkommentatorin.

In 1988, she received the highest civilian honor in Canada, membership in the "Order of Canada".

In August 2006, Manley Brent Theobald, a former hockey player married. They live together in Ottawa.

Since 2009, Manley is the official spokesperson for a Canadian initiative to combat ovarian cancer. Manley's mother had died in 2008 from this disease.
