Elizabeth of Denmark, Duchess of Mecklenburg

Elizabeth of Denmark and Norway ( * October 14, 1524, † October 15, 1586 in Gedser ) was a Danish princess and by marriage Duchess of Mecklenburg -Schwerin in succession and Mecklenburg- Güstrow.

Life

Elisabeth was the second child and eldest daughter of the ( second for him) marriage of King Frederick I of Denmark and Norway with Sophia of Pomerania ( † 1568).

After her father's death in 1533, it grew at the court of his heir, her half-brother, King Christian III. on. In 1542 it was with Duke Magnus III. betrothed of Mecklenburg; their wedding took place in Kiel Castle on 26 August 1543. The marriage remained childless, and after the death of Magnus in 1550 Elizabeth returned to Denmark.

In 1556 she married her second husband, Duke Ulrich of Mecklenburg, who was his cousin Magnus followed as administrator of the pin Schwerin. The couple had one daughter, Sophie, who was by marriage with her cousin Frederick II of Denmark at the age of 14 years, Queen of Denmark and Norway.

Elisabeth became involved socially and built almshouses in Grabow, Stargard, Biitzow, Güstrow and Stavenhagen.
