Elisabeth of Pomerania ( Polish Elżbieta pomorska, Czech Alžběta ( Eliska ) Pomořanská; * 1345, † February 14, 1393 in Prague), the fourth wife of Emperor Charles IV

Life

Elizabeth was daughter of the Duke of Pomerania Bogislaw V. and the Polish Princess Elizabeth (Polish Elżbieta Kazimierzówna ). Mother's side she was a granddaughter of Polish King Casimir the Great, the father's side of the Duke Wartislaw IV in 1358, she was engaged to the Margrave Otto of Brandenburg, but it did not come to the marriage.

Elisabeth married Emperor Charles IV on May 21, 1363 in Krakow, Poland. The politically motivated marriage destroyed the coalition of the Polish and Hungarian king, who had been connected with the Austrian Duke Rudolf IV against Bohemia.

On June 18, 1363 Elizabeth was crowned queen of Bohemia, five years later, on November 1, 1368 in Rome by Pope Urban V Empress of the Holy Roman Empire.

After that, Elizabeth devoted especially their children, as the Emperor usually was abroad, paying particular patronized her son Sigismund. Politically, it distinguished itself once again at the marriage of her eldest son Sigismund to the heiress of the Hungarian Kingdom, Mary of Hungary. Elisabeth said to have had an amazing physical strength.

The evening of life spent Elizabeth in South Bohemian cities. She was buried beside her husband in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.

Progeny

The marriage produced three sons and two daughters were born:

  • Anne (1366-1394) - married to Richard II, King of England.
  • Sigismund (1368-1437), Roman -German Emperor - 1385 married to Maria ( Hungary)
  • - 1408 married to Barbara of Celje
