Elke Sehmisch ( born May 4, 1955 in Leipzig ) is a German former swimmer who competed for East Germany.

Career

Her first international title she reached at the European Championships 1970 in Barcelona, ​​as they both in 400 -meter freestyle in a new European record time, and with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay in world record time, won the gold medal. At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, it was enough despite the new European record in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay to a silver medal, although she had set a world record in the flow. In Bratislava in 1971 and 1973 in Utrecht they won the European Cup with the national women's team.

1970 and 1972 she received for her athletic achievements in each of the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Resignation

After the first World Swimming Championships 1973 in Belgrade, where she won two sixth places over 200 meters and 400 meters freestyle, she finished her career. Then followed a degree in psychology. Today she lives with her family as a practicing psychologist in Leipzig. She has two daughters.
