Elkhart County, Indiana
Elkhart County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Goshen.
Geography
The County is located in the extreme north of Indiana, adjacent to Michigan and has an area of 1212 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: St. Joseph County ( Michigan), LaGrange County, Noble County, Kosciusko County, Marshall County, St. Joseph County and Cass County ( Michigan).
History
Elkhart County was formed on January 29, 1830 from parts of Allen County and Cass County. It was named after the flowing near Elkhart River.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Elkhart County 182 791 people in 66 154 households, and 47,630 families. The population density was 152 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 86.40 percent White, 5.23 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.92 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 5.36 percent from other races groups; 1.78 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.92 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 66 154 households out of which 36.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them in the household. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers and 28.0 percent were non-families. 22.6 percent of all households and 8.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.18.
28.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 to 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years. 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 44,478, and the median income for a family $ 50,438. Males have a median income of $ 35,907, women $ 24,051. The per capita income was $ 20,250. 5.8 percent of families and 7.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
