Ellis Clarke

Sir Ellis Emmanuel Innocent Clarke GCMG, TC ( born December 28, 1917 in Belmont, suburb of Port of Spain; † 30 December 2010) was a politician and statesman trinidadischer President of Trinidad and Tobago.

Studies and professional activities

After a scholarship in mathematics in 1938, he began studying law at the University of London, graduating in 1941 with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ). From 1941 to 1954 he worked as a lawyer at Gray 's Inn and Port of Spain.

From 1954 to 1956 Clarke Solicitor - General was (chief prosecutor ) and then Deputy Colonial Secretary. From 1957 to 1962 he was Attorney General ( Attorney General ) in the time of the Federation of the West Indies States.

After the independence of Trinidad and Tobago on August 31, 1962 Prime Minister Eric Eustace Williams appointed him as Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN ) and Ambassador to the United States. He was also accredited as Ambassador to Canada and Mexico. These offices he held until 1968. Subsequently, he was until 1973 Chairman ( Chairman) of BWIA West Indies Airways.

Last Governor General and First President

On September 15, 1972, he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as the successor to Sir Solomon Hochoy Governor-General of Trinidad and Tobago.

After the conversion of the island state in a presidential republic on August 1, 1976 Clarke was elected by the election meeting of the House and the Senate as the first President of Trinidad and Tobago and laid during his tenure the title "Sir" from. Later, he was re-elected and ended his second term on March 13, 1987. Because of political differences with the ruling National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR ), he renounced a third term. He was succeeded, after a six-day transitional presidency of Michael Williams, Noor Hassanali.
