The Ellis Park Stadium (English Ellis Park Stadium, named after the Johannesburg City Council JD Ellis), is a stadium in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.

History

Having already since the founding of the Transvaal Rugby Football Union, the question of venue was virulent and also appeared ever more urgent because of the confrontation of various Johannesburg clubs, in 1927 was found in the Johannesburg district Doornfontein an area of abandoned quarries and from the city under negotiation led by Councillor Ellis 13 acres of land leased. The stadium was inaugurated in June of the following year. In this first stadium 1955 100.000 visitors were counted as a record number of visitors in the rugby international match against England.

After the old stadium was demolished in 1979 to 1982, the current stadium was built, the first took about 60,000 spectators and was renovated before the 2010 World Cup again and expanded to 70,000 seats.

In Ellis Park wearing the football clubs Gauteng Lions, named for the province, and the Orlando Pirates play their home games. In addition, the stadium is home to two rugby teams, the Lions (Super 14), and the Golden Lions ( Currie Cup).

In Ellis Park the final of the Rugby Union World Cup in 1995 was held, which was won by the host nation South Africa against New Zealand 15-12 after extra time. 2010 was the scene of a total of seven matches of the Football World Cup in 2010.

The Ellis Park is the focal point in a large sports park to the east of Johannesburg. In the immediate vicinity is the athletics stadium in Johannesburg, the tennis stadium Standard Bank Stadium and the Olympic swimming stadium. Inside the stadium, football and rugby games as well as music events.

On 24 June 1995, the Boeing 747- 244B " Lebombo " the airline South African Airways flew under Captain Laurie Kay at low altitude the stadium before the start of the final match of the Rugby Union World Cup. She carried on the underside of the clearly visible words " Good Luck Bokke " ( "Good luck Springboks ").

On 11 April 2001 it came into the stadium to a stampede in which 43 people were trampled to death or crushed between grids. In the game between the two top teams Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates stormed thousands of football fans who had not received an admission card, which is already overcrowded stadium. Nearly 200 other people were injured, some seriously in the disaster.
