Ellmau

Ellmau is a municipality with 2675 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Kufstein, Tirol, Austria. The municipality is located in the judicial district of Kufstein.

The place is a summer and winter sports area and lives mainly from tourism ( approximately 5,000 beds ).

Geography

Ellmau is located at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser nature reserve at 820 m altitude in Söllandl, nestled between the limestone massif of the Wilder Kaiser in the north and the Hartkaiserbahn in the south, about 17 km from the motorway exit Kufstein -Süd. The settlement area extends over the entire Ellmau saddle which forms the watershed between the Inn and Großache.

History

The first mention learned the place in 1155, in a document of the monastery Herrenchiemsee. At this time a manor was passed in " Elmouwe " to the monastery of Sigboto of Constant home. Around 1240 Ellmau belonged to the court Söllland, which included the villages of Scheffau and Niederau. Today the Weistümer are only obtained, which represent an interesting potential information about the then- jurisdiction. Ellmau was also a well-known since prehistoric times Mart. As the village is located on the route between Kufstein and Innsbruck, a post office was built around 1616, which was administered until the 20th century by the Kaiser family man.

In the Middle Ages Tyrol was ruled by landlords. For purposes of clarity, the Schrannen were divided into so-called "quarter". Ellmau consisted of three districts: Ellmau quarter, Weißacher district and Rieser district. In the 19th century the municipality Ellmau was formed from these quarters, 1850, the district of Ellmau, Scheffau and Söll were combined to form a municipality named Soll. On October 4, 1865 but the area was again divided into three independent municipalities.

To date, Ellmau has developed into a tourist resort. The connection to the third-largest Wilder Kaiser-Brixental ski made ​​the place into a large winter sports region and, with nearly 1 million overnight stays per year of the front runners in the Tyrolean lowlands.

Church History

The parish was originally part of the original parish Ellmau Söll, which was assigned to the Diocese of Salzburg. From 1217 to 1817 Söll was at the Chiemsee bishopric. 1214 a church was first mentioned in Ellmau, which was supervised by Söll. 1463 was the place for the first time a pastoral care. In 1558 Ellmau has been elevated to the curacy, but still remained the parish Söll assumed. Approximately 320 years later Ellmau was awarded the parish status.

In 1426 we first mentioned a church of St. Michael. It is a Gothic building with a high altar and two side altars. 1740-46 the church was replaced by a larger baroque.
