Ellsworth County, Kansas

Ellsworth County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ellsworth.

Geography

The County is situated near the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of 1874 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lincoln County, Saline County, McPherson County, Rice County, Barton County and Russell County. In the County of Mushroom Rock State Park and the Kanopolis State Park lie.

History

Ellsworth County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Marion County and the free territory. It was named after the Fort Ellsworth, which was named after Allen Ellsworth, the 2nd Lieutenant of the 7th Iowa Cavalry.
