Elmar Mammadyarov

Elmar oglu Məhərrəm Məmmədyarov ( born July 2, 1960 in Baku ) is an Azerbaijani diplomat and politician.

Elmar Məmmədyarov studied 1977-1982 International Relations and International Law at the University of Kiev, and from 1988 to 1991 at the Diplomatic Academy of the Foreign Ministry of the USSR.

From 1982 to 1988 he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, first in the Protocol Department of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. From 1992 to 1995 he worked in the representation of Azerbaijan to the United Nations in New York. He then returned to his home and went in 1998 as Counsellor at the Azerbaijan Representation in Washington. In 2003 he was ambassador to Italy. He held until his appointment as Foreign Minister on 2 April 2004 this office.

Məmmədyarov is married and has two sons. In addition to Azerbaijani, he speaks also English, Russian and Turkish.
