Elmore Y. Sarles

Elmore Yocum Sarles (born 15 January 1859 in Wonewoc, Juneau County, Wisconsin, † February 14, 1929 in Hillsboro, North Dakota ) was a U.S. Representative from 1905-1907 and the ninth Governor of the State of North Dakota.

Early years and career

Elmore Sarles attended the public schools in Prescott and the Galesville University. He was one of five classmates who later governors of North Dakota were. Soon Sarles became a successful businessman. In 1881 he moved to Hillsboro in the Dakota Territory. There he founded a bank, from 1885, the then First National Bank of Hillsboro was built. As a result, Sarles and his partners at other banks in Dakota and Minnesota involved. Sarles was also active in the timber trade and the real estate business and owned in Traill County vast estates.

Governor of North Dakota

Sarles was a member of the Republican Party. After a term as mayor of Hillsboro, he was elected with 70:25 percent of the vote to Democrat Marthinus F. Hegge the new governor in 1904. As Governor, he used his experience as a successful businessman and was able to generate a budget surplus of $ 200,000 in the two years of his term. In addition, food laws were improved. After re-election in 1906 had failed, he had to resign from his post on January 9, 1907.

After the end of his tenure, Sarles withdrew from politics and went back to his private interests. He was involved in various stores and banks. Elmore Sarles died in 1929. He was married to Anna York, with whom he had four children.
