Elophila

Elophila nymphaeata

Elophila is a genus of butterflies of the family of Crambiden ( Crambidae ).

Features

The moths of the genus have clearly developed ocelli. The antennae of the males are scaly on the top and ciliated on the bottom. The Maxillarpalpen are short. The proboscis is rolled up and moderately long. On the bottom of the labial palps are protruding scales. The legs are relatively long. The coxa of the foreleg is about as long as the femur. On the forewing the vein R2 rises directly to the cell, they appear but stalked, as it is located very close to the base of R3 R4. The base of vein M1 is closer to R5 than M2, CuP is absent. On the hind wings M1 is exposed and connected by a cross wire to the base of SC R1 RS. In females, there is the frenulum of three bristles. The Praecinctorium distally bilobed. The Costalrand of the blades is staffed with more or less strong bristles. On the phallus are Cornuti. In females, the Colliculum is unclear, the ductus bursae has often heavily sclerotized areas. The ductus seminalis is wide and forms a side bag to the corpus bursae. On the corpus bursae no signals are normally present, rarely one or two signals are formed.

The caterpillars do not have tracheal gills.

Dissemination

The species of the genus are widely distributed in the Holarctic and also occur in the Afrotropical, the Oriental and the Australis. A few species are native to the Neotropics.

Biology

The caterpillars nate initially on the leaves of aquatic plants. Later, they feed on the leaves and live in this journal housings that consist of two oval parts of plants.
