Elpenor

Elpenor ( ancient Greek: Ἐλπήνωρ ) was in Greek mythology a companion of Odysseus and participants in the Trojan War.

After Homer's Odyssey, he was still very young and not very brave in battle. He belonged to the crew of Odysseus ship when it was slyly on the way home from Troy to foreign shores and islands. On Aeaea, the island of Circe, Elpenor like other companions of Odysseus by Circe was charmed into a pig, but changed back. He then had an accident but deadly: After he had drunk much wine, he lay down on the roof of Circe's house to sleep. The next morning, when his companions were preparing for the journey to the underworld, he was startled by the noise. Worried that she might forget him Aeaea, he forgot that he was on a roof, fell backwards into the depths and broke his neck.

During his stay in the realm of the dead, on the evening of the same day, Odysseus met the shades Elpenors, imploring him up for a dignified burial - Odysseus and his companions had the corpse Elpenors not buried before departure. Back on the island of Circe was held a funeral for Elpenor, dug a grave, his body and his arms burned therein and also piled up a mound of earth, on which Odysseus and his companions put a grave stone and an oar.

Elpenors alleged grave was shown at the nearby town in Lazio Circei; be upon him first myrtle grown. In the Lesche at Delphi, he was presented along with Odysseus.
