History

In Bombay the 19th century - a wealthy center for overseas trade - founded the Bombay Native Education Society ( educational association for the local population ) in 1824 an English school for the local population, although public opinion in England at that time was set against a formation of the locals. In 1827 the club decided to form an institute under the name of Elphinstone College to launch, named after Mountstuart Elphinstone, the outgoing Governor of Bombay, who had invested heavily in the education of the local population. The money for this was applied by a public collection. The college was formally established in 1835 and began teaching in 1836, initially with only two professors. As an independent organization, there is the Elphinstone College since April 1856. Since 1860 the University of Bombay is affiliated.
