Elsbeth Stagel

Elsbeth (Elisabeth ) Stagel, also Staglin (* 1300 in Zurich, † 1360 in Töss at Winterthur) was a nun and later prioress of the Dominican convent Töss.

She was the daughter of an alderman from Zurich. With questions about Meister Eckhart, she turned to Henry Suso and learned them in person to know in 1336. Between Suso and her a deep spiritual friendship developed, and the two stood in a lively correspondence. As a "spiritual daughter " Suso it is of great importance in his works; how far it has also contributed to their literary writing, is still a much debated question.

Elsbeth Stagel was co-author of the 1340 resulting Tösser sister book with the biographies of 39 sisters, which provide a broad representation of Tösser woman mysticism. Among the biographies, there is also that of Elizabeth of Hungary, who has lived with Stagel together in the monastery. Stagels reports, it is thanks to them that is relatively much is known about the life of the princess in Töss monastery today.
