Elstra

Elstra, Upper Sorbian Halštrow, is a country town in Upper Lusatia in Saxony in the district of Bautzen. The city's name is derived from the Schwarze Elster, which rises south of the city, near the village of Childish.

The city proper has only about 2,000 inhabitants and is one of the smallest cities in Germany. By incorporation of the neighboring villages in recent times, the population is approximately 2900 ( 2010).

The formerly independent municipalities Rauschwitz ( with the districts Gödlau and Childish ) and Prietitz were incorporated in local government reform in 1994 after Elstra. The district is one of the only Kriepitz the official settlement area of ​​the Sorbs.

History

Elstra is about 5 km from the junction Burkau Dresden- Görlitz to the A 4. There is a bus service from Hoyerswerda Kamenz after Elstra and on to Bischofswerda.
