Elysium Mons

Elysium Mons is the largest volcano in the Elysium Planitia region on the planet Mars. It was discovered in 1972 during the flyby spacecraft Mariner 9.

Elysium Mons rises 12.5 km over the surrounding area and has at the base of an area of 500 x 700 km. Its summit caldera has a diameter of 14.1 km.

It differs from the great volcanoes of the Tharsis region by the fact that no major Lavaausflüsse are visible on its flanks. In its vicinity several craters are visible, but not resulting from Meteoritenimpakten, but are of volcanic origin.
