The Elz is a 90 km long, right-side tributary of the Rhine in the Black Forest, Baden- Wuerttemberg.
Course
It rises north of Furtwangen area of Brend and the pipe Hardenberg ( between the Furtwänglehof and the Kolmenhof ) near the Breg - source current as hydrographic Source of the Danube.
In the upper reaches of the Elz river flows in a northerly direction, first through a high valley with meadows, bogs and shaped by glacial glaciers forms, then, after a steep section with the small Elzfällen, by a deeply notched, barely populated wooded valley.
In Prechtal it bends sharply to the southwest. Here the average, actual Elztalhotel that leads straight to the southwest and thereby separates the 700 to 900 meters sloping Black Forest in southeastern far lower parts of the Middle Black Forest begins. In the now densely populated valley follow the city Elzach the places winds and Gutach where the Elz flows to the larger by almost half Wilde Gutach. Below the city of Waldkirch takes the Elz from at Denzlingen in the Freiburg bay of the upper Rhine valley. Henceforth it flows, Emmen things and Teningen passing, in northwestern direction. When the bolt at the Kaiser chair the Elz River, coming from Freiburg im Breisgau Dreisamstadion and the Old Dreisamstadion meet. Soon thereafter, the Elz river bifurcates again: a certain amount of water (up to 8.5 m³ / s) flows over the Old Elz through the Europa Park Rust joins the Rhine at Allmannsweier. Any additional amounts of water are passed through the artificially created under the direction of Johann Gottfried Tulla Leopold Canal northwest of Rheinhausen into the Rhine.
Part of the water of the Elz is passed through a Mühlbach by Emmen things where it drives several hydropower plants and enhances the cityscape. The actual Elz is channeled bypassed in a flood -secured section at Emmen things and Teningen.
