Elze

Elze is a town of 8,868 inhabitants in the west of the district of Hildesheim, which is in the area of the metropolitan region of Hannover -Braunschweig- Göttingen in southern Lower Saxony. Elze is a member of Leinebergland region, a company incorporated under the Leader approach voluntary union of several towns and cities in southern Lower Saxony.

The city is situated on the river Saale, a tributary of the leash. The old town is characterized by half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Geographical Location

The city is located west of Hildesheim on the northern edge of the Lower Saxon highlands overlooking the North German Plain, the castle Marienburg, the Poppenburg and the monastery church in Wittenburg.

Town History

Humans settled in Elze Even before the year 800. At the time of Charlemagne the place Aula Caesaris ( " Imperial ") was, in short Aulica, hence the name Aulze and Elze developed. Elze was for about 800 of the seat of the Great founded by Karl Bishopric for Ostfalen under the patronage of the Apostles Peter and Paul, still appear in the name of the Protestant church and in the local coat of arms. Even the Catholic Church of 1936/1953 is reminiscent of that tradition. Louis the Pious moved the episcopal seat 815 to Hildesheim and placed it under the protection of the Virgin Mary.

On the evening of November 18, 1824 three-quarters of the city were destroyed by fire and then rebuilt.

On March 1, 1974, the surrounding villages Esbeck flour, Sehlde, Sorsum, Wittenburg and Wülfingen were incorporated in the course of municipal reform.

Nature reserve " Leineaue under the Rammelsberg "

The nature reserve Leineaue under the Rammelsberg is between Gronau (Leine) and Elze and represents a section of the middle reaches of the leash with their Aue and parts of the slopes of the Great Uthberges and Rammelsberg in the East under protection. Explanation of the name

Old names of the place are Aluchi 826-876, 1068 Alicga, 1135 Aulica 1151 Alitse, 1160 and 1204 Eleze Elze. For the place name two strands of tradition stand side by side: " Aulica / Aulika " and " Alitse, Eleze, Eletse, Elze ". In " Aulica, Aulika " is obviously a Latinization of " aula " for " Hall, Prince Hall " before. The second tradition strand is probably the Germanic word " ulin " " lazy, humid, musty " for the foundation.

Culture and sights

In Elze there is a local history museum, a city park, outdoor pool and several sports facilities. Overall exist in Elze 45 clubs and associations.
