Emanuel Feuermann

Emanuel fire man ( born November 22, 1902 in Kolomea, Galicia, † May 25, 1942 in New York / USA ) was an Austro- German cellist.

At 15, he became a pupil of Julius Klengel in Leipzig and two years later from this - recommended for a professorship at the Musikhochschule in Cologne - as the youngest professor ever. He was also principal cellist in the Gürzenich Orchestra and cellist Bram Eldering Quartet. He gave these functions, however, in favor of an extensive concert career throughout Europe soon again.

In 1929 he was appointed as the youngest professor at the Berlin Academy of Music. Here he played with Paul Hindemith and the violinist Josef Wolf Thal or later Szymon Goldberg String Trio. At sonata evenings he was best accompanied by his youngest sister Sophie.

On April 8, 1933 he was on leave from his professorship because of his Jewish ancestry and emigrated as Goldberg and Hindemith to London. After a tour of Japan and to New York, he returned to Europe in 1935 and married Eva Reifenberg. At the premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's cello concerto he played the solo part under Sir Thomas Beecham.

After a stay in Switzerland, he applied for U.S. citizenship in 1938. In New York, he led four nights at 13 cello concertos, which was hailed as a one-man revolution. It also came to the break with Paul Hindemith, because this Cello Concerto by Gregor Piatigorsky had had premiered.

On May 25, 1942 Emanuel fire man died in New York at the age of 39 years at the height of his career as a result of medical malpractice from an intestinal disease. The coffin wore Rudolf Serkin, Artur Schnabel, Arturo Toscanini, Eugene Ormandy, Mischa Elman and Bronislaw Huberman.

In his honor, the Emanuel - fire man for Violoncello Competition in 2002 on the occasion of his 100th birthday called into life. This is carried out every four years in Berlin, last from 16 to 21 November 2010.
