Emanuel Löwy

Emanuel Loewy (surname sometimes also Löwy, born September 1, 1857 in Vienna, † February 11, 1938 ) was an Austrian classical archaeologist.

From 1891 to 1915 Loewy was a professor of archeology and ancient art history at the University of Rome, among his students was, inter alia, Giulio Quirino Giglioli and Alessandro Della Seta. Here he was also a numismatic consultant King Victor Emmanuel and provided for the acquisition of important antiques and estates by the Italian State. Since he had retained his Austrian citizenship, he was forced to leave Italy in World War I and was from 1918 to 1928 Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Vienna.

Loewy used in his work the methodology of universal psychological sources of the mold. He was influenced by the concept of "memory image " of Ernst Brücke, and was also specialized in ancient Greek vase painting. 1889 appointed him the German Archaeological Institute as a full member.

Loewy was a friend of Sigmund Freud.
