Emanuel Schiffers

Emanuel Stepanovich Boatman (Russian Эммануил Степанович Шифферс, scientific transliteration Emanuil Stepanovic Šiffers; * 22 Apriljul / May 4 1850greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † 29 Novemberjul / 12 December 1904greg ibid. . ) Was a Russian chess master.

Life

Schiffer was son to St. Petersburg immigrant German parents. In St. Petersburg he attended from 1860 to 1867 the high school and studied here from 1867 to 1871 natural sciences. He then became a private tutor.

This livelihood he gave a polyglot, fluent Russian, German, French and English language, but soon the game of chess, which he had already learned the age of 15, on. When he in 1873 for the first time with Mikhail Chigorin, still under specification played, he was already the best chess champion of Russia.

Schiffer was considered a selfless person who likes passed his knowledge. He received one of the first chess teacher in the history of Russia, in 1889 he held the first public lecture on chess theory. He led chess columns in various St. Petersburg newspapers and the magazine Niwa. From 1894 to 1898 he was the publisher and editor of the chess magazine Schachmatny Schurnal. He has published in continuation of articles in his chess column the Samoutschitiel schachmatnoj igry [ The self-taught chess ], which came out after his death in 1907 in St. Petersburg as a book and to the Soviet period (1926 again in a processing by Nenarokow ) a popular guide remained the many editions experienced.

In his student Chigorin Schiffer grew up on a powerful competitor. 1878, in her first competition without default, skipper lost with 3:7 ( 3-7 = 0), but he won the second competition ( also 1878) with 7,5:6,5 ( 7-6 = 1). The two Russian masters played four more competitions (1879, 1880, 1895 and 1897). Schiffer has always been the underdog.

In 1896, Wilhelm Steinitz visited Russia and played in Rostov-on- Don raced Schiffer. Schiffer was subject to the honorable result of 4,5:6,5 ( 4-6 = 1).

Schiffers participated in a total of eight major international tournaments. His best result he scored in St. Petersburg in 1879 (3rd place). Also worth mentioning a good result he succeeded in Hastings in 1895, where he finished sixth. He also played with in the first two All-Russian Championships, 1899 and 1900/1901 and both times was second behind Chigorin.

His best historical Elo rating was 2672nd This he achieved in November 1896.

In his last years, Schiffer, who suffered increasingly from depression, withdrew from chess and the people. After he had suffered serious injuries from a fall, he never recovered and died soon after.
