Embassy of the Netherlands, Berlin

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Berlin is the diplomatic mission of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba in Germany, it is located in the monastery road 50 on the Spree Canal. The current ambassador is Monique van Daalen.

Following a Europe- wide tender, the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and Ellen van Loon the order received by the architectural firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA ) in Rotterdam on the draft. In addition to the specifications of the client, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, the strict urban regulations of the city of Berlin had to be met. The message is the second building realized by Koolhaas in Berlin after the Koolhaas - Haus am Checkpoint Charlie.

There was an internationally highly acclaimed work of art: An L- shaped building of exposed concrete connects to the neighboring buildings, and lets you despite surrounding perimeter block, the cubic main structure indemnify. Aluminum and glass characterize the external appearance of the building, the inside, the ' ferry ' houses, one east, one of the apple peel like writhing takes over through the whole building, the development and ends on the roof. Another special feature is the " Skybox " said projection on the western front of the building with views of the River Spree, which serves as a dining and meeting rooms of the Ambassador.

The design for the embassy building was awarded the Berlin Architecture Award 2003 and the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture in 2005.

The new embassy building was opened on 2 March 2004 by the Dutch Queen Beatrix and the German foreign minister Joschka Fischer ( Germany ) and Bernard Bot ( Netherlands).
