The coat of arms of Jerusalem (also in the flag of Jerusalem included) provides a blue (also black ) gemitteten lion rampant on yellowish ( golden ) background dar. The background consists of a mural arranged pattern. Left and right, running together in a fret below, laurel branches are visible.

About the Lion is to see a Hebrew inscription, in German means this Jerusalem.

Importance

The lion represents the "Lion of Judah " ( Bible, King James Version: 1. Gen. 49.9 ) dar. Judah, one of the 12 sons of Jacob ( Israel = ) is considered the founding father of the Biblical David, on the latter is the Star of David ( Magen David ) back. The symbolized wall in the background represents the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, the color yellow stands for the Jerusalem Meleke limestone. That the lion in front of the Wailing Wall stands may mean that the Lion of Judah representative of Judaism eventually to gain the victory over Jerusalem. The laurel branches talk left and right of the lions For this meaning.

In the New Testament the Lion of Judah ( see Revelation 5.5. ) Stands for Jesus Christ. This is an unwanted by the Israeli government Parallel. For evangelical Christian circles this parallel is no coincidence: So shall once again return to the earth, and put his foot on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem Jesus Christ. Again, the laurel branches are seen as a symbol of victory.

Use

The coat of arms can be found in the city of Jerusalem in all possible functions, be it at the entrance to the Knesset or in the city's attractions, whether these manhole covers with the crest as an endorsement or trash can. Kingdom of Jerusalem

Not to be confused is the coat of arms of the city with the coat of arms of the former Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem State ( 12-13. Century). This shows a yellow (golden ) St. George's Cross on a white ( silver ) base with at the corners mounted four other George crosses ( see Flag of Georgia ), so clearly demonstrates the Christian meaning of the coat of arms on (the kind pictured here of cross is called notabene Jerusalem cross).

In the city of Jerusalem itself, the Jerusalem Cross is at least as visible as the emblem of the city. Especially the city's churches like to use this subject, as they were mostly built by the Crusaders. Similarly, we find the Jerusalem cross in the crusader fortress in Akko. Nowadays, it is also a popular symbol on souvenirs ( keychains, etc.).

Political sensitivity

The coat of arms is not recognized by the Palestinian government, because this does not accept Israeli sovereignty over East Jerusalem.
