Emblem of Mozambique

Introduced in 1990, Mozambique's coat of arms is based on the coat of arms of the Soviet Union. It shows a bordered by corn cobs and sugarcane yellow gear in the front of a red sun and a map of Mozambique, including blue wave beam ( Mozambique ), a crossing with a hoe before a Kalashnikov is an open book. The wreath is bound about with a red tape, is at the bottom of the country's name " República de Moçambique ". Above, between corn and sugar cane plant is furthermore a Red Star.

Corn cobs and sugar cane symbolize agriculture and the nature of the country, the gear, the workers, the book, the social stratum of the intelligentsia, the hoe, the peasant class, the Kalashnikov the struggle for independence of the country and the red star of socialism. The red sun symbolizes the south of Africa and the hope of a better life.

Historic Coat of Arms

The former Portuguese colony of Mozambique was already before 1935 a coat of arms, which corresponded to that of other Portuguese colonies. 1951 Mozambique was a Portuguese overseas province converted into and adapted the valid since 1935 three-piece coat of arms by changing the field name. It shows a heraldic shield on one crowned with a mural crown golden armillary sphere.

In the first field are five blue sign with the five silver discs on the so-called Quinas; in the second field is in silver a red ribbon tied together bunch of green arrows; in the sign are thoroughly silvery wave beams. Below is a tape on which is to read the name of the colony, or from 1951 Übersseprovinz.

As Mozambique in 1975 became independent, it took a crest on which differed in nuances from used today, such as the brown color of the map, the color and design of the water, the tape with the state name " República Popular de Moçambique " and the total all round design. In 1982 the coat of arms was finally brought into the still valid form and amended in 1990, the state name " República de Moçambique ".
