EMC NetWorker

EMC NetWorker (formerly Legato NetWorker ) is a software solution of EMC Corporation for data security in large enterprises.

NetWorker automates and centralizes backups to tape, hard disks and flash-based storage devices across physical and virtual environments and supports the operating systems Linux, Windows, Macintosh, NetWare, OpenVMS and Unix. The deduplication of backup data is achieved by EMC Data Domain (DD Boost) and EMC Avamar. A central NetWorker server maintains a so-called zone data with the associated backup clients and NetWorker Storages.

The Java based NetWorker Management Console ( NMC) provides a user interface for functions such as client configuration policy settings, scheduling, monitoring, reporting and backup execution.

NetWorker backs up original client file systems and operating system environments. Using add- ons such as NMDA ( EMC NetWorker Module for Databases and Applications ) can also databases and applications such as Oracle, DB2, SAP, Lotus, Informix and Sybase, and Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint and SQL Server are secured. Client backup data can be written to an external NetWorker storage or on a locally attached backup device.

NetWorker PowerSnap modules automate the generation of point-in -time snapshots and cloning of data on supported disk arrays such as EMC CLARiiON and Symmetrix. The NDMP module can be used for client -less backups of NAS Filers like EMC Celerra or NetApp.

With VMware virtualized servers can be backed up directly by installing the NetWorker client on the virtual machine or through the VMware vStorage API ( VADP ) from VMware. NetWorker also supports backup and recovery of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V using the Volume Shadow Copy Services.
