EMD GP38-2

The EMD GP38 -2 is a 4-axle diesel-electric series locomotives of the U.S. locomotive manufacturer General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD ).

A total of 2,219 and 2,222 machines in this series were produced.

Development

The GP38 -2 is a further development of the EMD GP38 series. Here sat down at EMD first time, a modular construction of the components. EMD offered the soon as Dash 2 (English for line 2) designated series, analogous to its predecessor in three performance classes. In addition to the EMD GP38 -2 ( 1,500 kW ) was developed a medium-strength (EMD GP40 -2, 2,250 kW ) Sister series. 1980, added an even stronger series (EMD GP50, 2,700 kW).

Construction

The types of locomotives GP38, GP38 -2, gp39, gp39 -2, GP40, GP40 -2 and GP50 were based on a single framework. This results in an identical length for all series showed. In all Dash -2 series newly developed bogies were installed, which provide greater pulling power compared to its predecessors, according to the manufacturer's instructions. In addition, the electronic components were modular. This results in a simpler maintenance of the machines revealed.

The GP 38-2 and 40-2 GP use the same engine type EMD 16-645. The type designation EMD 16-645 means that the diesel engine had 16 cylinders with a cylinder displacement of 645 cubic inches. GP38 -2 are charged with Roots blowers in the GP40 -2 engine with exhaust-gas turbochargers is charging. Where the higher power of the GP40 -2 was not necessary, the GP38 -2 was often preferred, since the turbocharger meant more maintenance. The engines operate on the two-stroke principle, but have exhaust valves. They are so-called " low-speed " with speeds between 275/min (idle) and 875/min (full load).

The most obvious distinguishing feature of GP 38-2 compared to the GP 40-2 is the number of roof vents on the vehicle end. The GP38 -2 has two exhaust systems, the GP40 -2 has only one exhaust system. While the GP38 requires only 2 fans, the GP40 was equipped with three fans.

All machines ran on two -axle bogies Bloomberg.

Special series

In the years 1973 and 1974, 51 locomotives of the GP 38 -2W series were built with an enlarged cab for the Canadian National Railway. 20 more aircraft were delivered as passenger locomotives to Mexico. In these machines, the top of the stem was hoisted to the roof of the cab to make room for the Zugheizeinrichtungen. This machine previous models of GP series were similar.
