Emerich Coreth

Emerich Coreth SJ ( born August 10, 1919 in Raab an der Thaya, † September 1, 2006 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian Catholic theologian and philosopher.

Because of his thinking, which wants to establish in the 20th century in dealing with Immanuel Kant and modern philosophers metaphysics, he is attributed to the neo-Thomism. He was known primarily for his history of philosophy of art, which mostly endeavors with the philosophy of the 17th to 20th centuries to objective presentation, deal.

Life

He was born as the youngest of three children of Count Emmerich of Coreth to Coredo and Stark Mountain (1881-1947) and Countess Magdalena Matz of mirror field ( 1888-1973 ).

Coreth 1937 Jesuit. He studied philosophy and theology in Pullach and Innsbruck, where he in 1948 to Dr. theol. doctorate. At the Gregoriana for Dr. phil he was in 1950. doctorate. From 1950 he taught at the Theological Faculty of the University of Innsbruck, from 1955 until his retirement in 1989 as professor of Christian philosophy.

From 1961 to 1967 Coreth was rector of the Jesuit College in Innsbruck, 1969-1971 Rector of the University. As such, he gave the keynote address at the 1972 Congress of the Kösener Senior Convents Association in Würzburg. From 1972 to 1977 he was Provincial of the Austrian Province of the Jesuits.

For his work well beyond the university him various honors were bestowed, such as the Great Golden Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria (1970), the decoration of the Tyrol (1972 ) and the Cardinal Innitzer Price ( 1988).
