Geography

Geographical Location

Emerkingen situated on a hill on the southern edge of the Danube valley, about 35 km southwest of Ulm.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by the city Munderkingen, to the east by Unterstadion, to the south Oberstadion and Unterwachingen and in the west at Hausen am Bussen.

History

In Roman times it was situated on the territory of the present municipality of a cohort fort, together with associated Vicus. From the middle of the 1st AD to the middle of the 2nd century AD here a brickyard was operated. See also separate article castle Emerkingen.

About half a mile south of it later developed an Alemannic settlement, which must be accepted as the origin of today's Emerkingen. In the year 805 Emerkingen ( Antarmarhinga ) for the first time I. in a deed of the Counts Chadaloh and Wago St. Gallen to the monastery was mentioned. The village is named after the Barons of Emerkingen whose castle was demolished down to the " Roman Tower " in the 19th century.

Religions

On July 7, 1103 was consecrated in place with the castle chapel, the first church. Since May 3, 1900 Emerkingen seat of a Roman Catholic parish office, previously the town was the parish after Unterwachingen.
