Emery Roth

Emery Roth ( * 1871 in Sečovce, Austria - Hungary, now Slovakia, as Róth Imre; † August 20, 1948 ) was an American architect, the numerous apartment building in New York designed primarily in the twenties and thirties. Among his sons, the company was continued under the name Emery Roth & Sons and developed in the fifties to the eighties, one of the most influential American architectural firms.

Biography

Roth was born in a Hungarian Jewish family. At the age of 13, he emigrated to the United States after his family impoverished because of the death of his father. He began his architectural training in Chicago as a draftsman in the office of Burnham & Root. There he met the architect Richard Morris Hunt, who was impressed by his skills and invited him to work in his office in New York for him. After the early death of Hunt in 1895 Roth walked into the office of Ogden Codman, Jr., a designer and decorator who worked for wealthy customers in Newport at that time. However, three years later Roth set out with his own firm in New York on their own. In the interwar period the office of Emery Roth has delivered some of the most remarkable examples of apartment houses in the then popular Beaux- Arts style from, especially in Manhattan. 1947, a year before his death, Roth changed the name of his office in Emery Roth & Sons. After his death, Richard Roth took over the management. Under his leadership, the office increased significantly, with the focus of activity is now focused on the construction of office buildings. In the 50s and 60s, Emery Roth & Sons was responsible for dozens of office towers that were built to the changed zeitgeist from around 1955 mainly using glass facades.
