Emesopsis

Emesopsis infenestra

Emesopsis is a genus of tropical bugs ( Heteroptera) from the family of assassin bugs ( Reduviidae ). There are at least 22 described species, one of which, Emesopsis nubilus also occurs in southern Europe. A German name for the genus or individual species is not common.

Characteristics and lifestyle

The members of this genus have a length of a few millimeters to about a centimeter. They move, as is generally the bugs of the subfamily Emesinae, continued on their hind and middle legs, while the forelimbs are as gripping and grasping legs in function. With them the prey is captured, then pierced with the mouthparts and carried away. After the prey is sucked out, which can take half an hour. As a food serve various insects, such as beetles, bugs, Fly and springtails.

Habitat and Distribution

The species of the genus Emesopsis be found both in agricultural and forest ecosystems.

They come originally probably only in tropical Asia (especially India, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, New Guinea ) and Australia ( eg, E. bunda in Queensland) before, where by far the greatest abundance of species can be found even today. Only the type Emesopsis nubilus found worldwide in warm to hot regions (eg including Spain, Florida, Hawaii), which probably is a result of passive spread via the international trade.
