Emiel Puttemans

Emiel Adrien " Miel " Puttemans ( born October 8, 1947 in Leuven ) is a former Belgian long-distance runner, world record holder and Olympic silver medalist.

Start of career

At age 21 Emiel Puttemans was the first time in an Olympic final when he twelfth in the 5000 -meter run was at the games in 1968 in Mexico City. The European Athletics Championships 1969 in Athens, he was ranked 7th At the European Championships 1971 in Helsinki, he finished 6th place and was thus a place ahead of the Finn Lasse Viren. A few days after the European Championships presented Puttemans on his first world record when he ran 8:17,8 minutes over the distance of two miles.

The Olympic 1972

At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, he won his heat on 31 August in the 10,000 meter run with a new Olympic record of 27:53,4 minutes. The final on September 3, 1972 won Lasse Viren, who could undercut the seven -year-old world record of Ron Clarke despite a crash with 27:38,4 minutes. Four days after this run improved Lasse Viren in Helsinki the six -year-old world record of Ronald Clarke on 13:16,4 minutes. On the same day Emiel Puttemans improved in Arhus the seven -year-old world record in the 3,000 meters of the Kenyan Kipchoge Keino on 7:37,6 minutes. On September 20, 1972 in Brussels improved Puttemans then two world records at one time, when he ran the 5000 meters in 13:13,0 minutes, and traveling the world record over three miles improved on 12:47,8 minutes. The world record over 5000 meters should be underbid by New Zealander Dick Quax until 1977.

1973-1982

Puttemans began the year 1973 with the establishment of a Hallenweltbestzeit over two miles when he ran 8:13,2 minutes in Berlin; the way he improved the world record over 3000 meters at 7:39,2 minutes. 1973 and 1974 were each Puttemans European Indoor champion over 3000 meters. In 1975, he won with the Belgian team bronze at the World Championships in cross-country running. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal Puttemans gave up in the final of the 10,000 -meter run. 1978 won Puttemans still a silver at the European Indoor Championships over 3000 meters. For the Games in 1980, he retired from the semi-final over 5000 meters. 1982 Puttemans won the Rome Marathon.
