Emil Friedrich Kautzsch

Emil Friedrich Kautzsch ( born September 4, 1841 in Plauen, † May 7, 1910 in Halle ( Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian, expert on the Hebrew language and Bible critics.

Life

Kautzsch studied at the University of Leipzig, at the theological faculty, he was appointed as Lecturer in 1869 and 1871 as an associate professor. Since the winter of 1859/60 he was a member of the Leipzig University singers shaft to St. Pauli (today German singer shaft ). From 1872, he taught as a professor at the University of Basel, where he officiated 1878/79 as rector. In 1880 he moved to the University of Tübingen. From 1888 until retirement in 1908 due to illness, he was Chair of Old Testament at the University of Halle and had 1898/99 held the rector there.

Kautzsch was one of the founders of the German Association for the Study of interdenominational Palestine (1877 ) and was from 1888 one of the editors of the Theological studies and reviews. Had greatest influence his new version of the Hebrew grammar of Gesenius, Wilhelm (from the 22nd edition in 1878 to the 28th edition 1909), which was still reprinted in 1962 and translated into English. The dissemination of the results of contemporary exegesis should serve edited by him text Bible ( 1890-94, 31908-10 ), which was provided with brief introductions and explanations. As a supplement thought was also worried by him German edition of the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (1898-1900), which until the late 20th century as a standard work. He also gave out Karl Rudolf Hagenbach Encyclopedia and methodology of theological sciences ( 10th and 11th edition ) and Hermann Scholz ' demolition of the Hebrew volume and morphology ( thoroughly revised edition, 1899).

Kautzschs son Rudolf Kautzsch (1868-1945) was an art historian, his daughter Johanna (1878-1964) married the mathematician Ernst Richard Neumann.

Kautzsch was awarded the Order of the Crown 2nd class, with the Red Eagle Order 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and with the honorary citizenship of the city of Basel.
