Émile Deschamps

Émile Deschamps, origin. Émile Deschamps de Saint- Amand, ( born February 20, 1791 in Bourges, Cher département, † April 23, 1871 in Versailles, Yvelines ) was a French poet, playwright, librettist, and translator.

Life

Deschamps was the older brother of writer Antony Deschamps ( 1800-1869 ). With 21 years Deschamps was in 1812 with the poem La paix Conquise successful debut, which even earned him the attention of the Emperor Napoleon.

Deschamps was friends with, among others, Alexandre Guiraud, Victor Hugo, Jules de Resseguier, Alexandre Soumet and Alfred de Vigny. With these they were one of the first romantic Cénacle. These meetings regularly at the home of Deschamps took place, was also occasionally present with Alphonse de Lamartine. With some, including his brother, Deschamps was also one of the Parnassian.

Removes belonged to Henri de Latouche, with the Deschamps in 1818 along the comedy in verse could produce Le tour de faveur successful. 1824 founded Deschamps along with Victor Hugo, the literary and artistic magazine La Muse française. His published therein poems, short stories and other essays, he signed it with the pseudonym of the young moralist.

As a librettist Deschamps worked for Daniel -François- Esprit Auber, Vincenzo Bellini, Hector Berlioz, Jacques Fromental Halévy, Giacomo Meyerbeer and Rossini. As a translator, he was concerned about Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller earned, but also for his translations from English and Spanish, he was praised.

Due to the political events of the February Revolution of 1848, and his incipient blindness to Deschamps moved slowly back and settled down for the rest of his life in Versailles. Eight weeks after his 80th birthday, he died there on April 23, 1871; his last wish - to end the war - he did not live.
