Émile Gentil

Émile Gentil ( born April 4, 1866 in Volmunster, Moselle, France; † March 30 1914 in Bordeaux) was a French colonial administrator.

Biography

Gentil went after school education in the French Navy and served as a naval officer 1895-1897 an expedition of French Congo on the Shari to Lake Chad, and built it the French protectorate over the Islamic Sultanate Baguirmi.

On January 23, 1899, he was the Chari region named Commissioner ( Commissaire ) and as such belonged to the leaders of the campaign against the Muslim leader Rabih az- Zubayr, who was killed on 22 April 1900 in the Battle of Kousséri. In memory of the fallen on the same day the commander of the French troops Amédée -François Lamy Gentil founded on May 29, the city of Fort Lamy, who later became the capital of Chad.

On August 25, 1900, he left Fort Lamy and added Chad Territory on September 5, 1900 Fort Possel in today Central African Republic at. The Office of the acting Commissioner of the region he retained until July 2, 1902.

He then worked 1902-1906 Vice- governor of Middle Congo ( Moyen Congo) and at the same time 1904-1908 General Commissioner ( Commissaire Général ) of the French Congo.
