Émile Mathis

Emil Ernst Karl Mathis, also Ernest Charles Émile Mathis ( born March 15, 1880 in Strasbourg, † August 3, 1956 in Geneva ) was an automobile producer.

The son of a Strasbourg hoteliers (Hôtel de Paris), he went at the age of 12 years to England and started his apprenticeship there. After his return he founded in Strasbourg a company for automotive sales, maintenance and repair. In 1901 he was in business relations with the automobile manufacturer De Dietrich, for even Ettore Bugatti worked. A year later he met Ettore Bugatti know. In the spring of 1904, Emil Mathis and Ettore Bugatti combined with the aim of producing a motor vehicle. To this end, the company Hermes simplex was established, which consisted only until 1906. In 1910 he founded Mathis, who produced a wide range of reliable vehicles and was very successful before the Second World War.
