Emily Donelson

Emily Tennessee Donelson ( born June 1, 1807 in Donelson, Davidson County, Tennessee, † December 19, 1836 ) was the niece of the wife of the seventh U.S. president, Andrew Jackson. She was from 1829 to 1836 the unofficial First Lady of the United States, as Jackson's wife Rachel was already died in 1828.

She was born on the farm of her father John Donelson. He was the brother of Rachel Donelson Jackson, the future wife of President Andrew Jackson. Emily studied at the Nashville Female Academy.

On September 16, 1824 Emily married her first cousin, the diplomat and later candidates for election as U.S. president, Andrew Jackson Donelson ( 1799-1871 ). The couple had five children.

1836 worsened her health and she was diagnosed with tuberculosis. In June of the same year, she withdrew from the White House back to their plantation " Tulip Grove ".
