Emlingen

Emlingen is a commune with 272 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the canton Altkirch and is the seat of the municipal association Communauté de communes de la Vallée de dog Bach.

Geography

Emlingen between Witter village in the west and in the east Tagsdorf, 4 kilometers east of Altkirch and 14 kilometers south west of Mulhouse on the D419, called Route de Basel, the Sundgau. Through the municipal area flows the valley brook, a tributary of the River Ill.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1304, the place name is composed of the Germanic name " Emilio " and place names mission -ingen, suggesting that the place was established as part of the Frankish conquest. Archaeological finds of graves from the Merovingian period (5th to 8th centuries ) support this thesis.

The priory of Saint- Morand in Altkirch possessed in the Middle Ages Dinghof in Emlingen. However, the town itself belonged to Seigneurie Altkirch, in turn, to 1324 belonged to the Counts of Pfirt, and 1648, the Holy Roman Empire under the leadership of the Habsburgs, and finally the kings of France. 1793 Emlingen received in the course of the French Revolution the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government.

In the First World War (1914-1918) the town was evacuated.

Attractions

The chapel Sainte -Odile, which is also the Holy Fridolin consecrated by Sackingen, was built in 1759. It belongs to the parish Witter village.

Economy

From the 19th century until 1953 there was a limestone quarry and lime kiln a spot. Today the main industries are agriculture Emlingen and breeding of domestic cattle.
